Back Country Mt Twynam

Although Spring is in the air, the snow has still been calling out with quite a loud voice lately so that it is not easily forgotten.  To say our final farewell for the season we headed to Mt Twynam (Australias third highest mountain) for a week of fresh tracks in the back country... and boy was it a hoot!!

Home sweet home

The forecast was looking promising so we loaded the car up with excitement and anticipation at what was to be perfect spring skiing. After a trudge through the bush (weren't we meant to be skiing?) we crossed the Snowy River and found ourselves in a snowy bonanza!

With home set up and a sturdy kitchen bench carved into the snow we managed to sneak a few runs in on day one, which was lucky, coz day two wasn't so grand.   With temperatures hovering around minus 8 and a howling wind, it was a great time to catch up on some rest and book reading while the tents still smelled fresh.

Day three brought the sunshine right from the get go, so into it we jumped, picking a direction and following Pete on the hunt for some long fresh runs.  With some many mountains and slopes surrounding us, it was hard to choose which way to go, so much choice!!

The weather stayed kind to us for another couple of days, and our legs copped a hiding from the endless climbing and descending, each run finishing with a look over the shoulder to pick the next line, with so much choice it'd be criminal to ski the same line twice!!

But our run of perfect weather was to come to an end and as you'll see, the clouds came rolling in, and we went rolling out, before things turned nasty.  A beer and meat feast awaited our return to Jindibyne, a much better offer than camping in the snow/ rain/ wind and thunderstorms!!

Guess what i'll be doing this time next year? Wanna come??
