Birthdays in the Back Country!

Woohoo, its birthday time!  August has traditionally played host to the month long festivities known as our birthday (the tradition started by my old man, also an August boy).  Now I'm sure you'll all agree that birthdays are all about fun, and being a bit spoilt!

The biggest decision this year was what to do!  A skiing weekend had been planned months in advance, but as it approached the weather forecast  basically fell apart!  Strong wind warnings, snow showers and hardly any visibility for the whole week.  But after plenty of tooing and froing, we thought we'd better just go for it.  And what a great decision!

Along the Razorback

After getting out of work as quickly as possible the weekend started with a birthday cake (complete with real snowman on top) and a beer at the Wangaratta Ski Club.  The wind was howling, but we'd worry about that on Saturday.

And true to the forecast, Saturday was blowing! Cold, and windy enough to blow you off your feet (literally), but one thing the weather man got wrong was the sunshine, it was everywhere (except in the resort!).  So seven of us parked the car, and headed out the Razorback at Mt Hotham for some fresh tracks and some good old backcountry telemark skiing and snow boarding!  The snow was firm but fresh, and all ours! So there was nothing else to do but lap it up for as long as our legs could take.  Each run taking us out a little further, each run making our smiles a little bigger!

Gettin Maxtreme!

So Saturday was a raging success, but Sunday was keen to get some love too, and turned on another spectacular show.  We'd tracked out all the slopes, but with the howling wind banished, the snow softened up beautifully for a near perfect day, and gave us another opportunity to brush up those turns.
Could you get a much better birthday? I really don't think so!
