Berlin By Bike

One of Berlins mighty bikes

We arrived in Berlin unscathed, delivered by our random ride share driver to our next temporary home, another good friend of Sophs (and another internationally filled house of fun!).  Ride sharing is definately the way to get around Europe, so much faster and cheaper than the trains!
After a night of meet and greets we were entrusted with two trusty bikes that would guide us around the city for the next 2 days!
Full of energy and glad to be giving our walking legs a rest we rolled off and into the city.  It wasnt long before our bikes started showing their true character.... rock hard seat, no brakes, seat up a bit to high, a rattle that sounded like loose spokes and wobbly wheels, with fairly flat tyres!

Berlin Wall (he's not running from us!)

But our adopted steads held up perfectly (obviously seasoned campaigners) even on the cobbled streets that we found ourselves rattling along (glad for the flat tyres here!!) and we found ourselves rolling, wobbling, dodging our way around the sights, markets, parks, memorials, the wall, other touristy sites etc.  And we even managed to find our way home again!!

The bikes got us around more of Berlin than we could've done any other way, and it was great to be on the other side of the bell ringing, its usually us being dinged at for walking in the bike lanes, but not this time! Get out of our way tourists, don't you know you're in the bike lane... jeez!!!
A big building in Berlin with a big front yard (Reichstag)

The trusty steads!
Stead at Checkpoint Charlie

The Haulocast Memorial, actually a fun place! designed like a maze of concrete blocks its meant to bring laughter and happiness back to the area... and it works!

A bike for some of those doing Ironman next year, you can fit 6 people peddling on here!
The old Templehoff airport, now opened up to the public as a park.  Build your own garden, rollerblade around, bike, walk, windsurf whatever you want, the runway's about 2kms long and you've got two of them!

Enjoying some rare sunshine!! c'mon summer!
PS to see where we've been check out the maps page!

  6. What an excellent post, I am just a little late on the reply. I am hoping that the bike in the first photo got a bit of run, those forks looked very tough sure to handle the roughest of Berlins Roads. I look forward to reading your next post.

P.S. I intend on sharing your blog with the class for some great authentic reading activities hoping your comments on the community gardens will spark some interesting discussions on the environment (our current theme)

    Good job
