Overland Winter

Its cold, its wet and its the middle of winter what do you do?  While some like to snuggle into sleep-ins, others do a bit of work on the couch wearing in the groove that marks their spot in front of the TV, maybe you're dreaming of warmer days.  But not many people are thinking of seven day treks in Tasmania are they?  But they should!

So while others were making the most of the warm indoors a select group of us took to the wilderness of The Overland Track, one of Australia's most popular bushwalking tracks.  Starting at Cradle Mountains and making our way down to Lake Sinclair via Pine Valley.

We came expecting the worst, carrying snow shoes, ski/ walking poles, plenty of 'warm you up' gear (including a borrowed, and extremely great pair of down filled purple pants! Think sleeping bag for your legs) and water proof armour.  Our packs were full of more of the same 'warm you up' style goodies to eat so we were set no matter the conditions thrown at us.

Thankfully however we were in luck.  Yes we got our share of rain, but most of it came when we were tucked up in our hut in front of the fire.  Yes that's right, I said hut and fire!  The Overland Track, being one of Australia's most popular is decked out with a fine collection of huts for you (us) to call your home each night.  So warm and dry socks greeted us each morning!  ahhh the luxury...

So although we managed to avoid most of the falling from the sky water, we still encountered plenty of 'Tassie weather'  We had the frozen snow of Cradle Mountain that made climbing to the top too risky, frozen ponds and puddles to make the trails more like an ice skating rink.  There was some 'a bit too deep' mud and a few river sections that really should have been the track.  But on the whole we got lucky with the weather and even saw the sun occasionally.

So while I could fill up the rest of this blog post with a blow by blow recount, i'll let you fill in your own story.  All you need to know is we ate like kings, giggled and laughed at most farts and burps, walked ourselves into that space where time means nothing, got wet feet, ate some more, walked some more and soaked up all that Tassie had to give us! A great trip, that really couldn't have been much better!

Enjoy the rest of the trip!
